Saint Basil's Cathedral
Students started this project off by looking at cityscapes connecting their knowledge of landscapes to cityscapes. Students then looked at St. Basil's Cathedral, a world heritage site of international importance. Using pictures of St. Basil’s as starting point student then drew their own version of the building. Once they were done drawing students used watercolor paints to color their building to make it as vibrant and colorful as the real St. Basil’s. Students then created a landscape background to glue their cut out St. Basil’s on.
Scream Pictures
Every year in the fall students in 4th grade look at Edvard Munch’s painting “The Scream” or “Der Schrei der Natur”. Students learn that he was a Norwegian painter and printmaker, and during his life he produced 5 different versions of the Scream. Students created a landscape background that recreated the background of the Scream painting. For the heads students used model magic clay squeezing at the chin to create the scream stylized face.
Landscape Drawings
At the beginning of each school year 4th graders learn about landscapes. They learn about the key parts to a landscape like, horizon line, foreground, middleground, background, aerial perspective, and linear perspective using the Birmingham Museum’s Website. They also take the time to learn what can make a landscape more interesting, and how the inclusion of focal points (objects for the eye to look at) and leading lines (line that help lead the eye though the picture) can improve their landscape drawings.
Fire Prevention Posters
Fire Prevention Week has been celebrated since 1922, this year Fire Prevention Week is celebrated October 9- 15. Each year the 4th graders create a poster that goes along with the theme of that year. This year’s theme is “Don’t wait check the date - Replace smoke alarms every 10 years”
