Middle School Adaptive Art
Tissue Paper on Canvas
Snow Globes
My adaptive students did a great job with this project. On the first day they had a piece of blue construction paper taped down to the inside of a paper box lid, then using a marble with white paint they created the background for their snow globe. The next day I had a circle drawn on the back for them to cut out, along with a white paper with multiple circle sizes for them to choose from. The focus of this project is to improve cutting and glueing skills skills. Once everything was cut out they were able to glue it down and add their eyes, nose, and sequins to their snowmen.
Winter Birch Trees
This project was a fine motor skills project. My students first had to rip tape and stick it down to watercolor paper to create their trees. Then they had to rip smaller paper to create their branches. The next class period the students used blue watercolor paints to paint over the tape, and then they used salt to create texture in their blue skies. The third day my student removed the tape to reveal their finished pictures.
Hand Christmas Trees
Students had their hand painted green and then made handprints to create their trees. After every 2 handprints students needed their hand painted again. Once their handprints were dry students used construction paper crayons to decorate their paper.
Turkey Drawings
The students were given circles to trace, and then given step by step instructions on how to create a turkey using black oil pastel. Then students were given tempra cakes to paint their turkey and background.
Color Mixing Leaves
Students stared by choosing three colors of paint to be put on an ice cream container lid. Then they flipped it upside down on a piece of paper and twisted it to blend the colors. The paint lasted for two twists (2 fit on one 12x18 piece of paper) then they did a second paper. Once they had dried I made leave stencils to have them trace over their paint and they cut them out an glued them to a colored piece of construction paper.
Fall Hand Trees
My adaptive students did an amazing job on this fall trees project! This lesson helps students work on many areas of art that can be difficult for them (coloring, cutting, ripping and gluing). With the help of the teacher or associate students had their hands and arms traced, then students were asked to color brown inside the lines (a skill we are working hard on). Then they had to cut out their hand/arm -tree trunk (this is another challenging skill these students have been working on for over a year with me and I am so proud of the improvement I have seen!) After gluing down their tree trunk the were given green, yellow and orange construction paper to rip up and glue down. In previous years when I gave students paper to rip they would rip the whole thing and run out of time to glue, so for this project I told the students they should only rip 10 pieces then they needed to glue and then they could rip another 10 pieces. This worked great! They ripped and glued and ripped and glued and got their projects done much faster than I expected.
Autumn Trees at Night
The students used black oil pastels to draw the outline of the tree and the moon. Then using watered down brown tempra paint they painted their trees. After they were done they painted their sky using tempra cakes, (some did not finish the first day). On day 2 students drew the tree texture details using a black oil pastel, and finished their sky and moon with tempra cakes. I really enjoyed how these pictures turned out.
Color Mixing Pumpkins
My adaptive class just finished their color mixing fall pumpkins. On the first day students were given the colors red and yellow and 2 paintbrushes, their instructions were to mix the 2 colors together to create orange. They spent the whole first day creating their orange paper. On the second day students were given black paper to create their mouth, white paper for the teeth and eyes, and green paper for the grass and stem. Once they were done the glued their pumpkin onto black paper to finish their projects. Students who were gone on the first day were given a piece of orange construction paper to use instead of a red and yellow color mixed one.
Cool Color Landscapes
My middle school adaptive class created cool colored landscapes. They started by using sharpies to create a few lines to add a little dimension to their pictures. Then they used crayons to color in the areas. The next class period they used tempra cakes to paint over and fill in any empty areas that the crayons did not fill.
It looked like Spilt Milk
We read the book It Looked Like Spilt Milk today by Charles G. Shaw, and created cloud like images that 'looked like spilt milk"!
Monet's Garden
My adaptive student made Monet gardens this last week. They turned out so amazing so I had to share. I got this lesson from Mrs. Picasso's Art Room.
