Gesture Drawing
7th grade is gearing up to work with Keith Haring, and gesture drawings are a great place to start. Gesture drawings are quick drawings of a person lasting anywhere from 2 minutes, to 30 seconds, the goal is to get as the general idea of the person drawn in a short time, and if you have extra time you go back and add details back in. Below are some student examples.
Clay
Students made slab creations. Students rolled out slabs of clay and connected them to a base to create a clay vessel. Students were encouraged to draw on, or add designs to their clay
Shoe Drawing
This is another activity that we focus on what is there as opposed to what we think we see. We look at the lines that make up the shoe- the seams, different colors, the shape of the sole, exc. then the composition comes together to create a shoe drawing.
Color Wheel
The first major project I do with 7th grade is they paint a color wheel. With this project students must create their own color wheel. We all start out the same with a basic circle, and then each students puts their own twist on what their color wheel will look like. I help the students divide up their color wheel into 12 spaces for the primary, secondary, and tertiary/intermediate colors. Once that is done students divide each of the 12 spaces for a hue, a tint, and a shade making 36 spaces. Students also learn about tone, and are given the option of adding tone to their color wheel too.

Up Side Down Drawing
With 7th grade I focus on what is really there, as opposed to what our eyes see. One of the many activities that I do with 7th grade is drawing upside down (from Betty Edwards book: Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain). We start by taking between 10 and 15 minutes to draw the portrait of Igor Stravinski as drawn by Picasso, correct/ right side up.
Once the students have drawn it the 'correct'/ traditional way (right side up), we flip our paper up side down and draw it that way for 10 to 15 minutes.
At the very end we talk about what picture was better, and why that might be.
