1 Point Perspective Shapes
Today I introduced 1 Point Perspective for the first time to my 5th graders. I tried to keep it as simple as I could, each student had to make about 8 geometric shapes that had corners, and add a vanishing point on their paper anywhere they wanted. It is always fun to see how excited that students are when their shapes turn into forms.

Fire Prevention Posters
The 5th grade's second project this year was making fire prevention posters. This years theme was "Prevent Kitchen Fires", so we spent a lot of time talking about what causes kitchen fires, and the best way to prevent them. This group of 5th graders really got into coming up with ideas and they came up with so many amazing and creative posters!

Name Posters
Being new to any district is hard, but when you are a 'specials' teacher it can seem a little overwhelming with all the new faces. It gets very difficult to names and faces separately, but putting them together takes time; for this reason the first project I taught my new 5th graders was a Name Poster. This project is great to start putting the names and faces together, but it's also good to see what skills and prior art knowledge that students might have.
We start this project by drawing a boarder around our picture, and then add our name inside that boarder. The next steps are where it can get a little troublesome for students. They have to add a background to their name design, but it can't distract from their name, and they have to work within a color scheme.
