Prints
Students started by drawing many pictures in their sketchbooks. Once they had a drawing they liked they redrew it on a piece of paper the size of the foam they would be using to print from. Their picture was taped to the foam, and traced to make dents in it. After they had their image on the foam they took turns and rolled ink over their it, then transferred it to the colored paper. Each student made 3 of the same print. The last thing they did was name their print.
Shape Perspective
Students learned about 1 Point Perspective by using geometric shapes and a vanishing point. The students were asked to draw between 6 and 10 shapes on their paper and a dot somewhere. They then connected the corners of their shapes to the dot with out going through a shape to create 3D shapes.
Pos/Neg Line
This was a fun project, and a little different from our normal projects (only cutting and gluing). We started out by talking about Positive and Negative Space in pictures. Then each student picked a 12x18 piece of paper and a 9x12 piece of paper (both different colors). They then cut the 9x12 piece (positive space) and glued it down. They kept cutting all the way down the paper and fitting it together like a puzzle piece to create their negative space (Big paper color) between the smaller pieces.
Cityscape with Van Gogh Sky
We stared off with a review of landscapes, the most important thing would be the horizon line (where the building tops meet the sky). We also looked at the artist Vincent Van Gogh, and tried to recreate a sky that might be in one of his pictures. Using black construction paper, each student created a unique skyline with different shaped buildings and colorful windows. Put together each student created a beautiful cityscape with a Van Gogh night sky.
Shading Illusions
Using what they learned about shading, the student created a 2 color illusion.
Shading Bookmarks
This year the 4th graders learned how to use colored pencils to create different values. On the first side the mad values from dark to light, and on the other side they created values from dark to light back to dark.
Landscapes with Perspective
4th Grade this year is learning about the 3 scapes: Landscapes, Cityscapes, and Seascapes. We started with landscapes! The students learned about foreground, middleground, and background, along with aerial and linear perspective (aerial perspective is where things are clear and detailed up close and fuzzy far away, and linear perspective is where things are big up close and small far away). We also review what a horizon line is (where the earth meets the sky).
It's A Tiger Thing Poster
Each year I try to start off 4th grade with a poster project. This year my 4th graders did a poster using our school's PBIS standards (Be Safe, Be Respectful, & Be Responsible) to create posters for the hallways. Each poster had to have this year's theme It's A Tiger Thing, one of the PBIS standards, and a picture that went with the standard they choose.
